A pall of gloom descended on Madhurapur village in Dirai upazila of Sunamganj district, following the deaths of two brothers in a lightning strike on Wednesday morning.
The deceased were identified as Fakhrul, 47 and Fazlu, 45.
Azizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Dirai Police Station, said lightning struck the two brothers while they were working on their agricultural field during heavy rains in the morning. “The duo died on the spot.”
Lighting strikes are common in Bangladesh. Nearly 250 people were killed by lightning between February and September 2019, according to official statistics. In 2018, some 359 people died in lightning strikes.
In 2015, the Bangladesh government declared lightning as a natural disaster.
