A strong earthquake, measuring 6.0 magnitude on the Richter scale, was felt in different parts of the country including Dhaka this morning.
The tremor was felt around 8:21am, said Sheikh Hanif, Electronic Assistant at Dhaka Met office, reports UNB.The location of the earthquake was 26.81 North long: 92.48 E. The distance of the epicentre was 397 kilometres east of BMD Seismic Centre in Agargaon, Dhaka.
However, no damage or casualty was reported immediately.
Meanwhile, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake rocked the northeastern Indian state of Assam sending tremors to adjacent Meghalaya state and northern parts of West Bengal today, our New Delhi correspondent reports quoting officials.Initial reports spoke of widespread damages in Assam, the officials said.
According to the National Centre for Seismology, there were no immediate reports of any death or injury in the quake, struck at a depth of 17m below the surface.
The epicentre of the quake was 43 km west of Assam’s Tezpur, the Centre said.
Panicked people scampered out of their homes in many areas of Assam, reports said.The quake was followed by two aftershocks measuring 4.3 and 4.4 on the Richter scale at 7.58 am and 8.01 am respectively.
Many buildings in Tezpur, the district headquarters of Sonitpur, Guwahati and other places developed cracks.
“Just experienced a massive earthquake in Assam. Waiting for details,” Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted sharing photos of broken walls inside a building and of a broken boundary wall.
